I thoroughly enjoyed this intelligent and well written book. Richard Kigel does a great job blending the modern day and historical aspects without bouncing you back and forth. His research into the world of slavery through the time of emancipation, and the historical cataloging of that time is evident, and has even piqued an interest in reading some autobiographies from that time period.
